Success … Just a Little Late ...

12.27.13 Comets 8 - Bayonne 2

Going into the consolation game, there was still a feeling that the Comets should have been in the championship round. The previous loss still hurt, but the team would have to move on. They would have to sharpen their focus, and concentrate on beating Bayonne in the consolation round. And focus they did!

They came out playing strong and sticking to their game plan. Much of the play was in Bayonne's end, and Evan helped the Comets pulled away to a 2-0 lead with 2 goals at the end of the 1st. The 2nd period would see the Comets strong play continue, and this time it would be Thomas that would increase the lead to 4-0 by the end of the second.

The 3rd period would open with Robbie and Ian both scoring increasing the lead to 6-0. However shortly after that Bayonne would score two goals in less than 30 seconds, and visions of the Edison game started creeping in. Coach Church called a time out to settle the team down, give the players a bit of rest, and let them regain their focus that had been so strong. The Comets continued to play strong, and Robbie and Ian each scored one more goal, bring the final score to 8-2.

This game was a great opportunity to see some of the players that don't see a lot of ice time, to get some 3rd period action.  It proved to be a great night for the entire team!

And The Tournament Begins!

12.26.13 Comets 7 - Edison Township 10

This was going be one of those "one-and-done" tournaments. In order to make it to the Championship game, you have to win your first, and only game leading up to the championship game! That's a lot of pressure, with pretty much no room for error. Well, the Comets started off strong, and it looked as if things may go their way. The Comets managed a 4-1 lead by the end of the 1st period.

The Comets lead would continue through the second but that's when things would go south. Robbie first got a questionable Interference penalty which grew into a 10 minute misconduct, and then a game misconduct. We're still not sure why this happened and it was extremely unfortunate! This out the Comets at a real disadvantage. One Edison would capitalize on.

The 3rd period, the Comets were outshot 7-27, and more importantly, outscored 1-6, leading them to a 7-10 loss, and knocking them out of the championship round of the tournament! It was a real shame, because it really looked as if the Comets really had a shot at winning a tournament with such a small staffed team. Oh well, on tot he consolation game!

Ridgewood Would Not Be Any Easier!

12.22.13 Comets 3 - Ridgewood 7

Two tough teams two weeks in a row!  Not a perfect schedule, but one the Comets would have to face. And they would have to face Ridgewood with Thomas. As with Paramus Catholic, there was plenty of preparation, knowing that Ridgewood would also be a very tough opponent! However the Comets surprised RW by giving them a bit of a battle.

The Comets managed to keep the game very close, even only behind by one goal, as the Comets were behind 2-3, then 3-4. But again, with opponent having a deeper bench, Ridgewood was able to slowly pull away to a strong 3-7 win over the Comets. But as with Paramus Catholic, the Comets had a lot to be proud of, by giving Ridgewood a bit of trouble, while missing one of their better players! We'll just have to see how the next meeting goes!

No One Said It Would Be Easy!

12.15.13 Comets 0 - Paramus Catholic 7

There has been much talk about how strong Paramus Catholic and Ridgewood are this year. Both are at the top of the Comets Division. SO everyone knew the PC game was going to be tough. Last year PC had mercies the Comets with just over a minute left in the game. So this game was going to be … interesting.

The game actually started off with the Comets creating some pressure and even a few scoring opportunities. PC did not score until the later part of the 1st period. 0-1 by the end of the first.

The second period proved more difficult. PC came on stronger and managed to exploit a few opportunities the Comets gave up, and PC took a 0-4 lead into the 3rd Period. The Comets came out in the 3rd period playing hard, putting pressure on PC and again trying to create opportunities, but PC's bench proved too deep, and PC managed 3 more goals, finishing with a 0-7 lead over the Comets. Even though the Comets were shut out, they had a lot to be proud of. They had fought hard, and at least did better than last year!

Comets Do It Again!

12.08.13 Comets 7 - Dumont/Dem/NM 1

In the second meeting between the Comets and Dumont/Dem/NM, the Comets played a bit stronger, to come out with an even more decisive win. Ben was sidelined after a collision from the night before and Justin and Robbie Mandac were added to the rotation of players.

To make things even better, Thomas made his way back from another state to joint the team halfway through the game, and he looked very happy to be there. Scoring came from a variety of players, Robbie Marut netted a hat trick, and Ian, Evan, Thomas, and Alex all added one goal each.

In addition Steven came up big when he had to, and only let in one goal to help the team come away with a 7 to 1 win!

Now on to Paramus Catholic!

The Season Begins With a Bang!

12.07.13 Comets 4 - Dumont/Dem/NM 1

As the season got underway, the Comets faced a struggling Dumont/Dem/NM team. This was a great way for the Comets to get their "feet" wet, especially since they would be missing veteran Thomas Foschini. The Comets played well as a team and put together 4 very nice goals including 1 from Evan, 2 from Robbie M. and 1 from Dylan.

Steve had a solid opening game with 17 saves almost getting a sit out!

The Comets would face  the Dumont/Dem/NM team again the very next night.
